Designer Moment: George Stavropoulos

George Stavropoulos was born in Tripolis, Greece, in 1920 and studied design in Paris. In 1949, he opened a salon, Nikis B, in Athens. He initially became recognized for his custom-tailored suits and coats – although his most popular designs proved to be those based on the classic draped Greek silhouette.

In 1961, he emigrated to the United States and opened a wholesale and retail operation at a salon on 57th Street in New York. He became known for his evening wear that included details such as draping, asymmetrical folds, wrapped coats, kimono sleeves, floating panels, capes, and bias cuts – primarily made of colored silks and chiffons. By the mid-sixties, Stavropoulos’s flowing chiffon evening gowns and coat and dress ensembles were popular and worn by celebrities such as Lady Bird Johnson, Elizabeth Taylor and Maria Callas to name a few. Text taken from http://vintagefashionguild.org/label-resource/stavropoulos/

How adorable is this George Stavropoulos Spanish-style skirt featured in the February 15, 1971 issue of U.S. Vogue. The flowers are in beautiful shades of red, green, yellow and blue edged in ivory fringe.
